ASIC generally refers to specialized mining chips or entire machines built on these chips. These are the current generation of Bitcoin mining hardware. Acronym for “application-specific integrated circuit”. In other words, a silicon chip specifically designed to perform one specific function and only that function in contrast to CPU or GPU which perform a wide variety of functions. In the case of Bitcoin, they are designed to process SHA-256 hashing problems to mine new bitcoins.
